Two competitions for emerging writers

Breaking into the world of publication can be tough for emerging writers.

One excellent way to get a foot in the door is to enter competitions.

The Australasian Association of Writing Programs has two great competitions now open to emerging writers.

Who is an “emerging writer?”  For these competitions, according to the media release “Emerging writers will not have a full-length, single-authored, commercially published, print publication in any genre. Emerging writers who have published in electronic format only, or who have published work in collections showcasing multiple authors, are eligible.”

The Emerging Writers’ Short Story Prize

The theme for the 2018 Emerging Writers’ Short Story Prize is Australian life or culture.

According to the AAWP website:

“The winner of this prize will receive a ticket to the Australian Short Story Festival in Perth (including airfares and accommodation for the duration of the festival), a one-year membership to the AAWP (including subsidised conference fees to attend the AAWP conference). In addition the winner’s work will be considered for publication in the AAWP affiliated literary journal Meniscus.”

Entries close: 31 May 2018
Max word count: 3,000 words

Emerging Writers’ Prize

The theme for the Emerging Writers’ Prize this year is ‘Jagadhita’. “Drawn from Balinese Philosophy, Jagadhita is the individual pursuit of universal harmony and prosperity as one of life’s primary goals, interpreted in English as ‘The World We Create’.” Entries will need to respond to this theme.

According to the AAWP website:

“If you win you will receive — a ticket to the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF), accommodation for the duration of the festival and $500 towards economy airfares. In addition, you will receive a one-year annual membership to the Australasian Association of Writing Programs (AAWP) and fully subsidised conference fees to attend the annual conference of the AAWP, where you are invited to read from your work. The editors at Meniscus will consider your work for publication.”

Entries close: 30 June 2018
Max word count: 30 lines of poetry OR 3,000 words prose
