‘Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it;
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.’
–Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
In this four-week Online Live event, bestselling author and creative writing mentor Dr Kate Forsyth will help you unlock the door to your unconscious and find joy, inspiration, vitality and empowerment in telling your story. This event is for anyone who has a story they wish to tell – you may have never written before or have written hundreds of thousands of words. It aims to inspire, empower and energise you, and help you understand the fears that are holding you back from writing to your full potential.
Each week will focus on a different theme: Finding Inspiration, Voice, Storytelling Essentials, and Joyous Writing.
In the first half of each session, Kate will share what she has learned in her years of writing and studying the art and science of storytelling. The second half of the session will be spent in discussion among students, with Kate answering questions on voice, craft, managing time and expectations, and ways to plug into and sustain inspiration. Students will be given a few small exercises designed to stimulate their intuition and imagination.
Students’ writing will remain private – it does not need to be shared in the sessions, and can be completed in your own time, whenever you feel ready. The aim is to create a safe place where you can explore new ways of thinking about writing, and creativity. You’ll find fresh purpose and direction as you travel towards finding your voice.
This is a writing event quite unlike any other. All you need is a desire to write.
Maybe you haven’t written any stories since you were a child, or maybe you make your living by telling stories in one form or another. You might dream of writing just for yourself, or you might long for your words to be read by others. You can write stories about things that really happened, or things that may never happen.
All that matters is that you are willing to listen, learn, play, explore, discover and recover your joy in creativity.
This event is designed to empower you to write your own stories in your own voice, and to help you overcome the doubts, fears, and inhibitions that all creative spirits share.
In this unique event, you will spend four evenings with internationally bestselling author Kate Forsyth. You will have an incredible opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s best novelists.
With our Online Live events, you participate online from the comfort of your own home via Zoom. Kate is right there with you in real time as you learn practical ways to find your voice and tell your story.
Q: Do I need to have any writing experience?
A: No, this event is designed to inspire and help writers at any stage of their writing journey. It is suitable for writers of fiction, memoir, or creative non-fiction, and for people wishing to write for children, young adults or adults.
Q: Do I need to have an idea for a story or book?
A: Not at all. This event will help you find new ideas and inspiration if you have no idea what to write, if you’ve run dry and need to refill your creative well, or if you have so many ideas you can’t settle down to only one. It is also a great refresher for experienced writers who are struggling to move forward with an existing project.
Q: Do I need to have done any other writing courses?
A: No, no prior knowledge is necessary.
Q: I have done heaps of other writing courses, will I learn anything new?
A: There is always something new to learn! And this event is designed to illuminate aspects of the art of writing that are sometimes hard to put into practice.
Q: I have been writing for years but feel that I have lost my way – will this event help?
A: All writers struggle with creative exhaustion, loss of motivation, anxiety and self-sabotaging behaviours – it is the cost of creativity. This event has been specifically designed to shine a light into the shadows, and help you find your way forward once more.
Q: Will I know how to write a novel by the end of it?
Dare to Dream is designed to support and amplify our novel writing courses. It aims to help you find and sustain inspiration, access the subconscious where all stories are born, understand the mechanics of storytelling and how stories connect us with other people, and give you a sense of purpose and confidence in your own voice. It does not aim to teach novel writing essentials such as character development, world building, suspense, pace, grammar or foreshadowing – but luckily we have courses in those too!
Q: Will the event help me if I’m writing a memoir?
Yes, this event will help you, regardless of whether you are writing fiction, memoir or creative non-fiction. It is designed to help you find your own voice and explore your own past, something that is crucial in memoir writing as well as in other forms of creative writing.
Q: What’s the difference between this event and Creative Writing Stage 1?
This event, Dare to Dream, is like a tonic for your inner writer. If you yearn to write but self-doubt is holding you back, it’s a great way to dip your toe in the water. It aims to build your confidence and open your mind to the pure joy of writing so you can fill your life with more of it! For this reason, it’s also an ideal event if you have the foundation skills from Creative Writing Stage 1 but want to enhance your writing practice, develop more ideas, and harness your flow.
In Creative Writing Stage 1, you’ll learn the foundation techniques for brilliant fiction – whether you wish to write short stories, novels or just for fun. It teaches you the nuts and bolts of storytelling (such as crafting characters, scenes, structure and plot) and provides you with lifelong skills for every story you write. It’s an essential event for any aspiring author.
