‘If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail’

This age-old adage has some truth to it, but many writers feel that planning their story stifles their creativity or takes all the fun out of the writing process. The truth is that writing a novel without a plan is like going on a journey without a map. You are likely to get lost! You will also waste a great deal of time or, even worse, give up on your writing journey altogether, deciding it’s all too hard. A strong plot is vital for a story to succeed. In this course, you’ll learn exactly what you need to do to ensure your plot results in a powerful and riveting story.

Learn Online Live with Kate Forsyth

In this unique course, you will spend two sessions with internationally bestselling author Kate Forsyth. You will have an incredible opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s best novelists.

Kate will equip you with practical techniques to help plot your novel – from the very first idea to the final narrative arc.

With our Online Live courses, you participate online from the comfort of your own home in a live Zoom video-based classroom. Kate and your classmates are right there with you in real time as you learn the essential elements of plotting and planning and apply them to your own work.

Published author Sandie Docker is a graduate of Plotting and Planning with Kate Forsyth. She has now published four books with Penguin, including The Wattle Island Book Club, The Banksia Bay Beach Shack, The Cottage at Rosella Cove and The Kookaburra Creek Cafe.

Why plot?

Plot is one of the three key components of any narrative, and yet many writers fail to understand exactly what it is, or how to create one. A strong, compelling plot keeps your readers turning the pages long after lights should have gone out. It makes them laugh and cry and gasp and shiver. Yet building a plot is not nearly as difficult as most people fear. All it takes is a little planning.

There are many different ways to plan a novel, and many different ways to build a plot. This two-part masterclass on Plotting and Planning teaches you the techniques you need to make sure you don’t lose the plot.
